This Spring Break, Prevent Spring Break-Ins
Spring break is a great time to head to the beach, take a trip with your family and enjoy time away from home. If you think the only things to worry about are at the beach, think again!
Before you leave home, take a few steps to make sure your home is as safe as possible. Here are some ideas to help you avoid a spring break-in.
Keep your home safe on the inside and outside with trusted protection and monitoring options. Be sure to advertise your security system with a sticker in a window, on the front door, or with a sign on your lawn.
Unplug nonessential electronics. This step will reduce the risk of fire, power surges and could save you money.
Lock everything. Make sure all doors and windows are shut and locked.
Suspend mail and newspaper deliveries.
Install surveillance cameras on the perimeter of your house and property. Even a small number of cameras can make a big difference. Motion-activated cameras can send alerts to your smartphone, so you can take immediate action.
A video doorbell is an excellent way to view if a package has been left on your front porch or if anyone – wanted or unwanted – is paying you a visit.
Place important papers and valuables, such as jewelry and cash, in a fire-proof safe.
Alert neighbors and your home security system service about your plans, and make sure your door and window alarms are working properly.
Before and during your time away, don’t post that you’re planning to leave, or that you’re away on vacation on social media. Wait until you return to show off the photos.
While you’re away, it’s easy to keep an eye on your property by monitoring your electronic devices, like smart phones.
Maintaining your home safety can be accomplished by installing sensors that can signal the following and detect the following:
- Smoke
- High temperatures
- Flooding caused by broken pipes or excessive rain
- Motion either indoors or outdoors
Taking a little bit of care before you leave for your spring break destination can help you enjoy it more.
