The MOST Vulnerable Time for Your Home
Envision a home burglary, you probably think it is taking place at night. You probably see a masked burglar looking for some sneaky, convoluted way to get into the house, taking great care to not wake the home’s occupants before stealing anything. This is a common misconception of a typical home burglary. Approximately 60 percent of American burglaries occur during the day.
Why During The Day?
The average home is most vulnerable during the daytime because that is when the home is most likely to be empty. In the late 60’s, daytime home burglaries where only in the 15 percent. This was namely because women had not been fully immersed in the workforce and the average work time was shorter in general.
Nowadays, women work outside of the house. Kids also have longer school days and most parents are working full time. For burglars, this has made the day hours the best time to strike a house. The best targets for burglars are big and vacant houses. This is when few people are around to notice a burglary taking place. Burglars always look for the easiest way to do their “job”. In the calm of the night, not only are you taking away the ease of sight, you are adding the difficulties of sneaking in, making as little noise as possible, then sneaking out without drawing attention to them-self. With the “cover” of day, burglars can create illusions to neighbors that they are at your home for a reason, posing as a door-to-door sales person or service worker.
Occupied Home Illusion
You may spend most of the day hours away from your house, but there are steps you can take to protect your home during its most vulnerable time. Leaving your radio and TVs on can trick a burglar into thinking you are home. Always park your car in the garage, that way it is difficult for burglars to find if you are home.
Protect Your Home When It is Most Vulnerable
Aside from adding high security locks to your doors and windows to your property to protect your home from a burglary, you can also take some other important security measures. Consider installing a state of the art home security system to scare away potential thieves. This way, you will be able to go to work without worrying about the safety of your home and your most valued possessions.
Be sure to kick proof your front door so that the burglar has to spend serious time trying to access your home. Improve your home’s locks for an extra layer of security by keeping shrubs cut short, the lawn mowed and toys and tools put away. Never hide your spare key in an obvious place around the home. Take the time and effort to strengthen your home’s weakest points, whether it is the garage door or pet entryway. There is always a part of the home that can be better secured.
